Standard closet depth

THE ANSWER

A standard closet is 24 in (61 cm) deep inside, from the back wall to the closed door. That depth is set by the hangers: an adult hanger is 17 in wide (The Container Store), and on a rod 12 in from the back wall it clears the wall and the door by 3½ in. Dimensions.com calls 24 in comfortable and 20 in the tightest that works. Shelves and linen closets need less, 12 to 16 in. No building code sets a closet depth.

Why closets are 24 in deep

24 in 17 in 20 in 17 in 24 IN: STANDARD rod 12 in from the wall hanger 3½ in from each side 20 IN: TIGHT rod centered, 10 in hanger 1½ in from each side ROD 66 in 12 in

Clothes hang across the closet, so a hanger’s width runs from the back wall toward the door. The Container Store sizes its hangers at 17 in for adults, 15 in for petite sizes and 12 in for children. Hung from a rod 12 in from the back wall, as Bob Vila recommends, a 17 in hanger reaches 3½ in from the wall and 3½ in from the door. That leaves room for collars, sleeves and a jacket’s bulk.

A 20 in closet still takes adult hangers if the rod is centered, 10 in from the wall, but the clearance drops to 1½ in on each side. Coats will brush the door. Dimensions.com gives 20 in as the minimum for hangers and 24 in as the comfortable depth. In Family Handyman, contractor Mike Costello puts modern bedroom closets at 24 to 30 in deep.

Deeper isn’t always better. Rachael Fahncke advises against linen closets deeper than 24 in: clients expect more storage, but they get a deeper closet with nothing more to store in it.

Depth in a walk-in closet

A walk-in closet uses the same 24 in for each wall of hanging clothes, plus an aisle to stand in. With a 36 in aisle, hanging on one side takes a closet 5 ft wide, and on both sides 7 ft (Dimensions.com). See walk-in closet dimensions for every layout, with a planner.

How to measure closet depth

  1. Measure from the finished back wall to the inside face of the closed door, at about the height of the rod.
  2. Check lower down too: baseboards and door trim take a little depth at the floor.
  3. With bifold or sliding doors, measure to the back of the doors when they are closed, because that is where the clothes stop.
  4. For the rod, measure 12 in out from the back wall in a 24 in closet, or halfway in a shallower one. Its height is in closet rod height.

Questions people ask

What is the standard depth of a closet?

24 in (61 cm) inside, from the back wall to the closed door. It fits a 17 in adult hanger with room on both sides.

Is 20 inches deep enough for a closet?

Yes, for hanging clothes, if the rod is centered 10 in from the wall. A 17 in hanger then clears the wall and door by 1½ in, so bulky coats will brush. Dimensions.com gives 20 in as the minimum.

Is 22 inches deep enough for a closet?

Yes. With the rod 11 in from the wall, a 17 in hanger clears each side by 2½ in, by our arithmetic.

Is 30 inches too deep for a closet?

Not for hanging clothes: Mike Costello puts bedroom closets at 24 to 30 in. The extra 6 in gives coats more room but adds no rod length. For shelves, 30 in is more than you can reach easily.

How deep should closet shelves be?

12 in for shoes and folded clothes (Dimensions.com). ClosetMaid’s wire shelves come 12 or 16 in deep.
