Standard full-size washers and dryers are 27 in wide. Front-loaders stand about 39 in tall and 32 to 34 in deep; top-load washers are 42 to 44 in tall and 27 to 30 in deep (Whirlpool, Maytag). Side by side, a pair measures about 54 in across, and both makers ask for a space at least 56 in wide. Stacked, a front-load pair is about 77 to 80 in tall. Compact machines are 24 in wide.
Will it fit? Washer and dryer fit checker
Enter the width, height and depth of your space. The checker lists which washer and dryer setups fit, with the makers’ clearances included, and draws the roomiest one in your space.
Each setup uses machines at the top of the makers’ typical sizes, 1 in at each side and between them, 6 in behind for hoses and the vent, 24 in above top-loaders for the lids and 1 in above the rest. Our arithmetic from Whirlpool’s, Maytag’s and GE’s guides.
Standard washer and dryer sizes
| Machine | Width | Height | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load washer or dryer | 27 in | about 39 in | 32–34 in |
| Top-load washer | 27 in | 42–44 in | 27–30 in |
| Any full-size washer or dryer | 27–28 in | varies | 30–35 in |
| Front-load pair, stacked | 27 in | 77–80 in | 32–34 in |
| Laundry center (tower) | 23–27 in | 63–76 in | 26–33 in |
| Compact washer or dryer | 24 in | 33–36 in | 24–26 in |
| All-in-one washer-dryer | 23–27 in | 33–39 in | 22–30 in |
Whirlpool and Maytag guides; the “any full-size” row is GE’s, which gives compact depths up to 29 in. Large-capacity machines are usually the same size outside (Maytag), but not always: LG’s mega-capacity pair is 29 in wide, 40.8 in tall and 32.3 in deep.
A dryer is normally the same size as the washer it pairs with, so a matching pair lines up side by side or stacks with a stacking kit. Capacity, in cubic feet, is inside the drum and doesn’t tell you the outside size.
Side by side: the width you need
Two 27 in machines make 54 in. Whirlpool and Maytag ask for a space at least 56 in wide, and Whirlpool and GE suggest 1 in between the machines; with 1 in at each side as well, that is 57 in, by our arithmetic. LG’s larger 29 in machines need at least 60 in.
- Behind: about 6 in for hoses and the dryer vent (Whirlpool, Maytag, GE); LG allows 5 in for its machines.
- In front: about 4 ft to load and unload front-loaders (Whirlpool, Maytag).
- Above top-loaders: at least 2 ft for the lids (Whirlpool, Maytag).
- Under a counter: Whirlpool’s WFW6620HC washer needs 39 in from the floor to the underside of the counter.
For the room around the machines, see laundry room dimensions.
Stackable washer and dryer dimensions
- Stacked front-load pair: 27 in wide, 32 to 34 in deep and about 77 to 80 in tall (Maytag; its example is 77⅜ in). Whirlpool plans a space about 29 in wide and 80 in tall.
- Laundry center (tower): a washer and dryer built as one unit, 23 to 27 in wide and 63 to 76 in tall (Whirlpool); no stacking kit needed.
- Compact pair, stacked: 24 in wide, 66 to 72 in tall and 24 to 26 in deep (Maytag, Whirlpool).
Laundry rooms need a ceiling of at least 6 ft 8 in, or 80 in (IRC R305.1), so a full-size stacked pair fits under the lowest ceiling the code allows, with little to spare.
Depth with the door open, and pedestals
A front-loader’s door swings out from the front. Whirlpool’s WFW6620HC washer is 31 9/16 in deep, and 54⅞ in with its door open; LG’s mega-capacity machines are 32.3 in deep, and 57 in with the door open. Pedestals raise front-loaders 10 to 16 in for easier loading (Whirlpool, Maytag): Maytag’s side-by-side pair stands 38⅝ in tall, and 54¼ in on pedestals.
Getting them through the door
Measure the path from the front door to the laundry space before you buy. For its 29 in wide machines, LG asks for doors and hallways at least 30 in wide at their narrowest point, and 43.4 in to make a 90° turn at a corner or stair landing. A standard interior door opens less than its size: HUD’s design manual gives about 30 to 30½ in clear for a 32 in door, so a 30 in door opens about 28 in, by our arithmetic. That passes a 27 in machine, with little to spare. See standard door sizes.
Questions people ask
What is the standard size of a washer and dryer?
27 in wide each. Front-loaders are about 39 in tall and 32 to 34 in deep; top-load washers 42 to 44 in tall and 27 to 30 in deep.
How wide is a washer and dryer side by side?
About 54 in. Leave a space at least 56 in wide (Whirlpool, Maytag), or 57 in with 1 in at each side and between.
How deep is a washer and dryer?
32 to 34 in for front-loaders and 27 to 30 in for top-loaders, plus about 6 in behind for hoses and the vent. GE gives 30 to 35 in for full-size machines.
How tall is a stackable washer and dryer?
About 77 to 80 in for a full-size front-load pair (Maytag), and 66 to 72 in for a compact pair.
Will a washer and dryer fit through a 30 inch door?
Usually, just. A 30 in door opens about 28 in once the door itself is in the way, which clears a 27 in machine. LG asks for 30 in doors at the narrowest point for its larger 29 in models.
Are dryers the same size as washers?
Matching pairs are: both 27 in wide and close in height and depth, so they line up or stack.
